Bed raisers can be supplied which will raise the height of a domestic bed. Back rests and over bed tables are also available. Bed rails which fit between the base and the mattress can be useful to help the person turn in bed or get from a lying to sitting position. These can usually be fitted to domestic beds.

Adjustable electric beds have to be requested as specialist equipment by a Community Nurse or Occupational Therapist following an assessment. These are more commonly used when the person is dependent on care workers who will be coming as part of  a package of care. Different types of mattress can be supplied depending on the person’s need. In some areas waterproof bed covers can be ordered by the District/Community Nurses or there may be an incontinence laundry service. The District/Community Nurse should be able to refer for this service if it is available in your area.
