3) Registering as a carer with your GP

Many GP practices in Scotland are recognising the carer role and are making their services available on a more flexible basis with the carers needs in mind.

Some GP surgeries have a carer register, each time you or the person you care for makes an appointment this will be highlighted on their computer system and they will be more likely to offer home visits if the person you care for is housebound.  If they do not have a register, ask for a written note to be put into your case notes and those of the person you care for highlighting the fact that you are a carer. A good GP will use this information to help you get in contact with other professionals and services which you may need. You can ask for a carer health check and you have a right to be given an annual flu jab.
